This is a very well restored and quality motorcycle, built with the best components and improvements that make it a very reliable version of a 1973 Shovelhead FLH, but still is in the spirit of the original machine. 


The second photo (and a couple at the end) show the bike with the front fender, chain guard, pull back handlebars, and turn signals mounted.  They are not currently on the bike but will be included in the sale. The rest of the photos show the bike as it currently sits.


The description below is from the previous owner that we purchased the bike from.
He is the individual that completed the restoration.

I will first describe the bike as it is today, and then will follow up with history with the bike for your information, if interested. New 84 Cubic Inch Stroker engine, built with the best and modern quality S&S components.  No comparison to stock original 1973 engine.


Chassis


·         Frame and triple trees stripped and powder coated gloss black.   Frame is straight with no damage.  VIN stamp matches Pennsylvania title.

·         Original 73 FLH rear swingarm painted black.  New bearings and shafts.

·         Progressive Brand covered rear shocks (one inch lower) powder coated gloss black

·         Original FLH rear fender struts powder coated gloss black with chrome attach hardware

·         Original oil tank powder coated gloss black, with HD aluminum trim and FLH decal.  Oil temp
 gauge / plug installed. 

·         FXE battery tray and cover powder coated gloss black; Stainless steel strap.

·         New HD battery installed in 2017.

·         HD 1996-2001 FLH forks with
single front brake caliper and HD drilled floating stainless disc on left side only.   Provides excellent front braking; much improved over original 73 banana caliper. Forks and upper fork covers powder coated gloss black.

·         HD 1996-2001 handlebar controls and master cylinder; all wiring run inside bars except turn signal wires.   

·         HD Nostalgia rubber grips

·         Currently Mini Ape Hangers in Black are installed.  HD handlebars with correct shape and pullback for 73 FLH are included and shown in the pics.  Brushed finish on chrome bars. 
Bar mount is correct rubber mounted bar clamp.

·         HD late-model mirrors; black.

 dual element chrome turn signals - Inlcuded but not currently mounted.

bare bones solo seat.  Rear seat mount is on fender if two up seat is desirable.

Engine – Best Part!  - A BRAND NEW engine was installed in 2017!




·         New factory Harley-Davidson case with numbers matching VIN stamp.  Bought from Harley-Davidson Dealership in Richmond, Indiana.  This is not a worn out old case, but brand new Harley-Davidson case.

·         All new S&S internal components built into
 new HD case.  Engine alone is worth over $6000 if bought new from S&S.   The engine is an 84 Inch stroker kit from S&S, including flywheels, rods, pistons, Sidewinder cylinder heads (dual plug), pushrods, hardware, etc.

·         Leinweber L-31 Hi-Torque Cam

·         HD polished cam cover (cone) with FLH decal on chrome points cover

·         HD polished aluminum rocker covers with aftermarket rockers arms.

·         New S&S oil pump – polished aluminum

·         New S&S Sidewinder cylinder heads are dual plug capable (right side currently plugged)

·         New Dyna S dual fire ignition system; includes new coil, pickup 
and wiring.

·         Paughco 2-into-1 header pipes with Khromwerks FLH 3 inch muffler with fishtail end cap - no baffle.  Great sound and flows well.  Entire exhaust is brushed chrome to match pull back handlebars and stock engine finish.

·         Cal Products heavy duty 4-speed transmission case with MSO

·         Andrews 4-Speed gear set; much improved over stock gear set

·         Transmission has about 15,000 miles on it.

·         Ratchet Top shifter rebuilt with HD parts

·         Shift arm, arm cover, and rod powder coated gloss black

·         Stock FLH inner and outer primary covers – inner powder coated gloss black; outer is brushed aluminum to match handlebars and exhaust. 

·         New BDL 11 mm Belt Drive primary belt with
 adjustable idler pulley.

·         New BDL Clutch – much improved over factory stock clutch

·         Primary is vented by spacing out covers, and oiler not connected; not required for belt drive.  This is a dry primary.

·         Rear chain is quality aftermarket heavy duty chain

·         Chrome rear sprocket

·         FLH full cover rear chain cover powder coated gloss black – reinforced where typical cracks found.

·         Spyke Hi-torque electric starter

·         HD alternator and voltage regulator
 
History

Written by the previous owner

I bought this bike in 2004 in Detroit Michigan. 
Seller reported it as being an ex-Detroit city police bike.  It was not in Police colors when I bought it.  The bike is currently in Police colors in honor of its theoretical heritage.  The bike was in desperate need of restoration and I completed a full restoration of the motorcycle over a year and half period, using as many original parts that were worth saving, but making improvements everywhere possible.   The original engine ran, but needed to be rebuilt, so I decided to upgrade to an S&S engine.  The engine that I built for the bike at that time is NOT the engine in it now.   It was an S&S 93 cubic inch engine that I built from kits available from S&S at that time.   I also built the transmission up at that time with all the parts listed above.  After finishing the bike, I road it 15,000 plus miles and it proved to be quite a nice ride.

In 2006, for personal reasons, I decided to sell the 
bike, and sold it to a fellow worker / friend of mine.  He discovered then that brand new Harley-Davidson engine cases were still available for purchase, and he wanted the engine case (VIN number) to match the frame rather than the 93 inch S&S engine I had in the bike.  I still had the original engine and case.   So, we removed the 93 inch S&S engine I built and sold it.   Harley would stamp the original VIN number into the new case, as long as you turned in the original case and did this through an HD dealer.  That is what we did through the HD dealer in Richmond, Indiana.   So the engine case currently in the bike is a BRAND NEW Harley-Davidson case with the correct VIN stamped into the case and matches the frame VIN. 

I then built the engine currently in the bike with all new components as described above into this HD original case.  I installed it back in the bike.   He wanted an enclosed belt drive primary, so we sold the primary parts I had 
in the bike, and he bought the new BDL parts listed above.  He was moving to Colorado, so he bought a Trock / CV carb to work at high altitudes and sold my original S&S Super E.  He moved before we got the bike fully running, but essentially it was almost ready for the road again with the new engine and primary parts.  His plan was to finish it himself and ride it.

Fast forward to 2016 and my friend never got the bike running in Colorado.  His interest in motorcycles went away.  It sat in a dry garage in Colorado from 2006 to 2016. So after all that
 time I got the bike back from him in 2016.  

In the fall of 2016, I did the following work to get it roadworthy…again.  I wanted the bike to look cleaner and meaner, rather than the original touring look.

·         Replaced Trock / CV carb with new S&S Super E carb.

·         Put
 new fuel valve and rubber hoses on fuel tank.  The tanks had been drained of gas in 2006.

·         Removed original FLH spot lamps and turn signals and installed
 handlebar mounted turn signals (not currently mounted).   

·         Removed fiberglass saddlebags and mounts and sold them.

·         Removed Mustang seat and replaced with Bare Bones Lepera seat for cleaner and lower slammed look.  Seat height is really low and feels great.

·         Finished installation of BDL primary belt drive and clutch.

·         Replaced Crane HI4 /Dyna coil dual plug single fire ignition system (for S&S dual plug heads installed) with new Dyna S dual-fire ignition system.  I prefer the simplicity of
 it, and don’t like the appearance of all the plug wires on the dual plug setup.  I also don’t believe dual plugged heads are necessary with this 84 inch stroker kit.  The holes in right side of heads are plugged with unconnected spark plugs.  S&S told me it’s not a problem.

·         I broke in the engine per S&S instructions.  It is running great, lots of torque, and starts fantastic.  Sounds awesome and runs
 like a Shovelhead should.

If you are knowledgeable of Shovelheads, you will know that this bike is not the same as an old original 1973 FLH.   The upgrades I have made, and the engine, transmission
, and driveline are built far superior than an original bike.    I built this bike to be reliable and safer for riding and not any attempt at a correct numbers matching restoration.
